Reminder: No school Monday, June 20 in observance of Juneteenth  All MPS buildings are closed on Monday, June 20, in honor of Juneteenth. Each year on Juneteenth (June 19), communities around the United States gather to reflect on our country’s history of slavery and the struggle for civil rights and equality. Juneteenth is also known as Jubilee Day or Juneteenth National Freedom Day and has grown to be recognized all over the country.

Learn more about Juneteenth in this video with Derek Francis, manager of counseling services and Lee Jordan, the Midwest and state director of the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation as they discussed and took questions about the history behind Juneteenth, how it’s been celebrated in Minnesota and ways you can commemorate it.

For events and information on how to celebrate Juneteenth this year, visit the Park and Recreation Board event website.
