If you're reading this, you're a stakeholder...

Becaue South High has been designated as a school needing comprehensive support by MDE, based on our three-year graduation rate for students receiving Special Education services (less than 67%) ... it is our obligation to notify families of this designation, and engage stakeholders--families of students and community members--in:

  • Completing a comprehensive needs assessment looking at the reasons why the school was identified as needing support and improvement.
  • Developing an improvement plan addressing the root causes behind low student achievement or gaps, which must include at least one strategy backed by rigorous research showing its effectiveness.
  • Implementing and monitoring the improvement plan once it goes into effect.

To date:

We are in the feedback gathering step of our comprehensive needs assessment process, sharing data with families, students and staff. At site council, Parents United for South High, and staff meetings, we have looked at data and collectively come up with a list of 8-10 observations about the data.

Via survey link in the Wednesday, Dec. 19 and Wednesday, Jan. 9 school newsletters, we are asking parents, students and staff to participate and complete this survey by Friday, Jan. 11.

Next steps:

  • The week of Jan. 14, 2019, the Comprehensive Needs Assessment committee (members of the SHS Instructional Leadership Team) will review all the responses from the survey and compile a list of 2-4 of the responses that received the most votes from our school community.

  • The committee will follow up, pursuing a root cause analysis of those 2-4 data points and develop school improvement goals that will guide the work of South High for the next 3 years.

  • Thank you for lending precious time to participate in the survey, with the goal of enhancing our educational mission at South High.
