MINNEAPOLIS – Following a groundswell of community support--by students, parents and alumni--and a festive rally that took place in minus 20 degree temperatures, the heat was on for Minneapolis Public Schools in 2017 to deliver on South High's decades-long vision for an athletic field. Indeed, details were outlined in the 1996 South High master plan.
This week, Thursday, Aug. 29, 2019, that vision will be realized when football teams, South High and rival Breck, set foot on a gridiron, replete with new turf beneath stadium field lights. This will make possible, for the first time ever, regular South High home games after sunset.
South High Athletic Director Amy Cardarelle, says the impact of these upgrades on many sports, like soccer, track and field, is significant, but particularly so for the football team. "We have parents of football players who've never seen them play at home, because with no lights, our games have been scheduled immediately after school, at 3:30 p.m. Finally, football will be a family event at South High."
The full scope of the field project--which broke ground in 2018--also includes a new track, scoreboard and fencing. And thanks to the generosity of benefactor and MPS alum Harvey Feldman, the project expanded to include installation of a press box and sound system.
Feldman, a 1961 graduate of Southwest High School, planned to pay for the lights. But, Cardarelle says, "When he saw lights were covered, he said, 'What else do you need?' When we told him, he didn't hesitate. He wrote out a check and gave it to us."
