Driver's Education

South Community Education offers Driver's Education Classroom Training throughout the school year. Classes are held after school at South High and over the summer at 2225 E Lake St. For more information about current classes contact Khadra Fiqi at khadra.fiqi@mpls.k12.mn.us or 612.668.4326.

  • Driver's Ed Classroom Training is a 30 hour state required course to prepare students to take the driver's permit test. The class cost has a sliding scale fee starting at $95. Students will not take the actual written permit test in this class. Students must schedule and take the permit test at the DMV after they have signed up for Behind the Wheel. Students must be 15 years old to take the permit test.
  • During class students will have the opportunity to sign up for Behind the Wheel (BTW) driving lessons. The BTW cost is $250 and is paid directly to the instructor, not to Community Ed. BTW is state required as well and students must be registered for BTW in order to take the permit test. Once students have registered and paid for BTW they will receive a Blue Card and can take this to the DMV to take the written permit test. Once students have their permit they can schedule BTW driving lessons with an instructor.
  • Students cannot miss any Driver's Ed class periods. The state requires that students are in class for 30 hours. In the case of an emergency or severe illness the student and guardian must inform the class instructor and the Community Ed coordinator, Ayub Awnuh.
