Head Coach Joe Hyser: Cell 612-710-0564. Season as Head Coach at South…..Served as an assistant coach at DeLaSalle from 1985-1990 and at South from 1992-1996…..Attended Minneapolis Community and Technical College and then transferred to the University of Minnesota and Graduated with his Bachelor’s Degree in Kineseology…..Earned his Master’s Degree in Industrial Technology…..Played professionally in Europe during the 1990/91 season…..Coach Hyser’s goals include improving on last season’s record as well as helping the young men grow and develop their skills. He wants the team to be able to develop a bond which leads to great teamwork…..He hopes to use basketball as a way to show that education is something that all his players should value.

B-Squad Head Coach Russell Smith: Fifth season coaching basketball at South……Has been married for 21 years and has four children, ages 28, 27, 17, and 10 (Three daughters and one son)…..Has been working with young people for 22 years, and 17 years with the Teen Teamworks program with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board…..Played Basketball for South, graduating in 1983…..First team all-state in 1983 at guard, who was called “The best guard in the state,” by coach Flip Saunders. He averaged 28 points and eight assists per game for the Tigers his senior year, who would have won the conference title, but the Tigers had to forfeit two games for using an ineligible player……Played one season for Inver Hills Community College before his career was cut short after he was in a life threatening car accident while visiting colleges in the Washington, D.C. area where he hoped to earn a scholarship to continue playing basketball……After returning to Minnesota, Coach Smith began working with inner-city youth, especially those court ordered into support programs for 20 years…..Coach Smith has worked at South for four years serving as one of the schools security personal…..Coach Smith hopes to impart on his players that an education is important because you need to have something to fall back on in case playing basketball does not work out, as it unfortunately did not work out for him. Because of this, he is leading by example and is currently working on his four-year degree at Central Colorado Tech College though their on-line degree program.
Character Development Coach/Assistant B-Squad Coach Rodney Lossow: Cell 612-387-7963. season as an Assistant Basketball coach at South…..Became South’s Head Football Coach in February 2017….. Served as an assistant football coach with South High since the Fall of 2014….. was Head Football Coach at Roosevelt High School for 18 years…..Also has been Head Softball Coach, Head Gymnastics Coach, Head Girls Soccer Coach and Head Badminton Coach in Minneapolis throughout his 27 years working in the District…..Taught Physical Education and Adapted Physical Education for 27 years in the Minneapolis Public Schools. He currently teaches Adapted Physical Education at South High School and Roosevelt High School…..Coach Lossow is a South Graduate…..Attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison on a Football Scholarship…..Enjoyed a five-year Professional Football Career playing for the New England Patriots, Los Angeles Rams, Calgary Stampeders (CFL) and the Orlando Thunder (WLAF)…..Coach Lossow has been married since 1995 to Janine and has three sons…..Go Tigers!
