Frequently Asked Questions about Advanced Placement Testing at South High School

Is taking an AP test required?
Not in most courses, but there are significant long-term advantages to preparing for and taking at least one AP test while in high school.  For example, a 2008 longitudinal study demonstrated that AP students had better graduation rates than those who did not take AP.  AP English Literature students who took the course AND the examination had a 62% higher college graduation rate than those who did not.

What tests should I take?
It is a good idea to take examinations in the subjects that you like most, know well, or want to study seriously in college. It is also wise not to schedule too many examinations the same year.

When are the tests?
Tests are scheduled Monday, May 1 - Friday, May 12.

What colleges and universities actually give credit for AP scores?
In fact, more than 3,200 US colleges and universities offer credit and/or advanced placement for qualifying AP scores.  AP courses and qualifying exam grades also increase eligibility for and scholarships, especially at selective schools in the US and Canada.


How do I sign up?

When do I sign up?

  • Wednesday, Feb. 1 - Feb.27 
  • All payments are due by March 2, 2017.  No exceptions.


How do I pay?
You pay through Total Registration with a credit or debit card. 

  • Tests are $53 each (including a processing fee from Total Registration).
  • Free if you qualify for free or reduced lunch
  • No money is collected at South High School

The actual cost of the test is $93, but the fee at South is subsidized by the State of MN.  It is important that you only register for tests that you sincerely intend to take, because South is charged $15 for each test not taken that has to be returned.

It is very important that you read the titles of the examinations carefully before signing up. 

If you do not see an examination listed under TR that you want to take, please see Ms. Elizabeth McMillen or Dr. Anne Marie Plante.  For courses with multiple sections, it is important to select the correct section and instructor name.


Special registration notes for AP courses offered at South:

Physics:                Select Physics 1, NOT Physics 2 or Physics C.

Calculus:               Be sure to select correctly between AB or BC.

Spanish:                Select Spanish Language and Culture, NOT Spanish Literature.


Can I get a refund if I pay and have to cancel?
You must cancel a registration by March 9 for a refund.  After that, there are no refunds.
