The 2002-2003 wrestling season was described by Captain Leif Kopietz as a “very successful season.”  They finished the year tied for 3rd place with Washburn with a 3-2-1 record.

Senior Adam Assefa said, “This is by far my best season.”

Having a successful conference season did not come easy.  This year’s team developed an incredible chemistry.  This was made more important with the addition of former South State Tournament wrestler Drew Gau as an assistant Coach.

The team started the conference season with a defeat of Southwest.  There is no score available when this article was written.  The team then lost to Roosevelt, who finished second in the conference, 43-24.  Two more wins against the Northside schools added to the success of the team.  North was dispatched 51-22 and Henry lost 48-30.

The eventual champion Edison Tommies defeated the Tigers easily, 59-15.

The last meet of the conference schedule was against Washburn.  It was a very close set of matches with no team being able to take control.  Because of this, NO ONE won the match!  It ended in a 39-39 tie!

South did not have much success in the non-conference season, winning only two matches, one to conference foe North, 46-40, and one to Brooklyn Center, 48-23.

The team lost to Hopkins 54-30, Washburn 42-40, St. Paul Harding 47-28, Chisago Lakes 61-12, Park of Cottage Grove 48-24, Minnetonka 78-0, and DeLaSalle 45-31.

In the Region meet, South won their first match, defeating Hopkins 56-24!  As stated above, Hopkins won an earlier meeting.  Unfortunately the Tigers run at the Region championship ended when they lost in the next match to Totino Grace 75-0.

The wrestling team produced five all-conference wrestlers: Adam Assefa, Joel Binder, Keith Deluney, Hamed Firouzi, and Leif Kopietz

The team is looking forward to the next season because only three team members will be graduating.  Also, the 103 pound weight class is manned by 7th-grader James Locke.
