For 10 straight seasons, the South Cross Country Team has won the Conference Title and advanced to the State Meet.  Senior co-captain Mark Thomson said, as reported in the 1999 South Yearbook, “Past success of the team was motivation enough for us to win this year.”  The team’s goal was to make it back to State.

South opened the season hosting the Nokomis Invitational.  Even though the Tigers finished seventh in this meet, the Tigers have been using early meets to prepare them for the post season.

At Monticello, the Tigers finished fourth, improving on times and running form.

The Tigers continued improving at the Metro Invitational where they finished third.

In a tough Apple Valley Eagle Invitational, South finished fourth.

In Burnsville, South improved to third.

The last race of the regular season saw the Tiger win the Anoka Rum River Invitational.

This set up the Conference Meet.  In a shocking upset, Southwest claimed the title, edging out South 28-34!  South’s 10-year hold on the conference championship was broken. Malcolm Richards, third place, Mike Neumer, fifth, Peter Keesey, sixth, Mac Page, ninth, Taylor Hanson, 11th, Mark Thompson, 12th, and John Case, 13th, were the South runners who placed at the Conference Meet.

Many teams would have given up, but the Tigers looked at the bigger picture.  South rebounded at claimed the Region title advancing to the State Meet.

At State, the Tigers finished 12th.

Warren Kaari finished his 32nd season as the Head Coach of the Tigers.  Margaret Hoyt finished her second season as his assistant.
