The theme of the season was to believe in ourselves and play with confidence according to Head Coach Doug Revsbeck. (1997 South Yearbook)  After winning the conference title last season, the Tigers had their sights on higher goals.  The 1997 South Yearbook quotes junior Renee Willette as saying, “We’re setting our goals high this season.  State is a must or bust.”

South opened the defense of the conference title against Roosevelt.  The Teddies fell 3-0 and the Tigers were on their way to the defense of their title.

Washburn was second, and also fell 3-0.  North lost to the Tigers 3-1.  Edison lost 3-0, followed by Henry, who lost 3-0.  Southwest ended the first half losing to the Tigers 3-2.

The second half started continued South’s winning ways.  Roosevelt and Washburn both fell 3-0.  North lost 3-1.

South and Edison faced off and the unthinkable happened. After winning 24 straight conference matches over the last three seasons, the Tigers were upset by the Tommies 3-0!

South returned to winning, beating Henry.

In the last conference match of the season, South and Southwest faced off.  Both teams had one loss, so the winner would claim the conference title.  South came out determined and shut out the Lakers, 3-0.

South advanced to the Twin City match against Cretin-Derham Hall.  Cretin won the first two games 15-13, 15-9.  South bounced back and won game three 15-12, but fell in game four 15-4.  Cretin claimed the Twin City Trophy.

Greg LaLonde was the assistant coach this season.
