The 1996-1997 Tiger gymnastics team began the season with their fifth different coach in the last five years.  This year’s coach, Dr. Joe Rosenfield, hoped to instill hard work and a tenacity which would take the team back to the top of the conference standings.

During the conference season, South competed against Southwest and Washburn twice and the rest of the conference only once.

The first conference meet was against Roosevelt.  The Tigers defeated the Teddies 107.85-91.5.  The second meet of the year was also a victory, with South defeating the Henry/North 111.15-92.85. South completed their sweep of the northside schools with a 115-55-96.05 beating of Edison.

Then came the first meet against Washburn.  The meet was close, with South coming out on top, 121.15-117.2.  The first meet against Southwest was even closer than the one against Washburn.  South won by only 0.3 of a point, 119.3-119!

The regular conference season ended with a triangular meet with both Washburn and Southwest.  South hung on to win 123.2-112.5 (Southwest)-98.5 (Washburn).

Both South and Southwest competed in the Twin City meet against Cretin-Derham Hall and St. Paul Central.  Cretin won with a score of 141.8, Central was second, 121.5, South third, 119.9, and Southwest fourth, 114.8.

There are no results available for how South fared in the Conference and Region meets.
