The 1988-89 Gymnastics season was one for the record books for South.  Second-year Head Coach Lisa Wilson led the team to their first regular season conference championship and undefeated conference season.  The team also set a single meet scoring record.

The first meet, held November 23, was held earlier this season than in the past.  South took on Washburn.  South won 123.35-108.65.  The 123.65 points broke the single meet record of 119.9 set against Henry and Roosevelt during the 1985-86 season.  However, the record would not last long.

The second meet of the season was against Southwest.  South again won 116.85-100.35.

December began with another record.  As stated above, the 123.65 point record set two weeks earlier would not last long.  South took on Roosevelt and won 125.35-122.45, and in the process set a new record for single meet points.

The last meet of the season was after Winter Break against Edison.  South won 112.55-92.1, finishing their conference season undefeated.

After winning the conference regular season title, the Tigers were favored to win the Conference Meet as well.  However, Roosevelt upset South by 0.8 point and took the championship racking up 124.5 points.  South finished in second place with 123.7 points, which was the best finish in the history of South gymnastics.

Because of their second place finish in the Conference Meet, South joined Roosevelt in the Twin City Meet against Cretin-Derham Hall and St. Paul Central. Cretin finished in first with 130.5 points, Central second, 129.55, South third, 123.45, and Roosevelt fourth, 119.6.

In the Region 5AA Meet, South finished in 3rd place scoring 128 points.

The JV team finished with a 3-2 conference record, tied for 2nd place.  Like the Varsity, the JV finished in second place behind Roosevelt in the JV Conference Meet.
