The 1987-1988 began with promise. The team was maturing and showing promise after their second place finish a year earlier with no seniors on the team. They also had a new Head Coach, Kevin Anderson.
The team started the conference season with a four game winning streak. That combined with the five game streak at the end of the 1986-1987 season gave the Tigers a 9-game winning streak.
The first game was against Roosevelt. The Teddies were beaten 46-30. Washburn was beaten 56-34. Edison was the next victim, losing 54-22. The Henry Patriots were the next victim, losing 56-30.
Southwest was the next game and they caged the Tigers easily, winning 48-2. North finished the first half of the Conference season. Even though the game was closer than the Southwest game, the Polars still won, 64-55.
The second half started as the first half did. A 24 point win over Roosevelt, 66-42, was followed by a 14 point win over Washburn, 54-40. Edison was the next victim, losing by 30, 65-35. Henry was defeated by 19 points, 62-43.
Next came the rematch with Southwest. Southwest won the first game by 20 points. South had an uphill battle. The game was a back-and-forth event, with South winning 53-49. The final game was against North. They lost only one game. South lost two. If South won, there would be a three-way tie for the conference title. (Southwest lost two games). Unfortunately for the Tigers, North took the lead and never looked back. The Polars won 65-49. South finished with a 9-3 record and in third place.
Two non-conference game scores were reported. South beat St. Paul Central 62-28 and St. Paul Como Park 66-52.
