1978-1979 Volleyball Season

After the best finish in the history of the Tiger Volleyball program, South players and coaches expected to improve and take the next step toward a championship.  Head Coach Rich Friedrichsen would be assisted this season by a new assistant coach, Lorrie Lussier.

South opened the season against Henry.  The Patriots won in two straight, 18-4, 18-10.

South jumped out to an 18-16 win in game one against Southwest.  But Southwest came back winning the next two 18-16 and 18-7.

Washburn won the first game 18-14, but South tied the score, winning 17-19 in game two.  Washburn claimed the match with an 18-15 win in game three.

South gained their first win of the conference season with an 18-9, 18-7 sweep of North.

In a rematch against Washburn, the Tigers hoped to turn the tables and win, but the results were almost exactly the same.  Washburn won 18-14.  South won game two 17-19.  Washburn won the match with an 18-11 game three win.

South and West clashed on October 10.  West won game one 18-15.  South won by the same score in game two, 18-15.  West claimed game three 18-16.

The Tigers won their second match of the season, beating Edison in two straight, 18-15, 18-4.

Roosevelt beat the Tigers 2-0, 18-6, 18-5.

In the last conference match of the season, South defeated Central 18-10, 18-8.

South finished the conference season with a 3-5 record, tied with Edison, North and Washburn for fifth place.  Overall the Tigers were 3-6.
