The second season of South Cross Country was one where the team expected to have a decent season.  The team, relatively young and inexperienced, hoped to grow and improve during the season.

South won one conference dual meet during the season.  It was a 15-50 (low score wins) win over West.  The team was overjoyed to earn their first ever win.

The team came close in three other meets, losing the three by one point each.  The final against Central and North was 27-28!  (The Tigers lost twice to Central by the same score!)

South fell to Henry by a 20-40 margin.  Washburn also beat the Tigers 18-47.  Roosevelt won 16-47 and Southwest was victorious by a 16-46 margin.  The worst defeat of the season was to Edison, 15-50.

South did win a non-conference contest against St. Paul Harding.  The final was 24-31.

South fared well in the conference meet, finishing in 7th place, ahead of three schools.  Southwest claimed the title with 32 points.  South finished with 199 points, missing out on 6th place by two points behind Roosevelt.  South’s best finisher was Carrie Boswell, who finished in 18th place in a time of 13:36.00.  Terri Cowan finished 24th.

Head Coach Warren Kaari said, according to the 1978 South Yearbook, “I think the team improved a lot from last year and I think the team has a lot of potential for next year, since four out of the seven members are staying.”  He also hopes for a bigger team of 15 or 20 members.

The two top runners were Carrie Boswell and Terri Cowan.  Boswell set a school record in the two mile at 13:06.00.
