1977-1978 School Year
Varsity: Front Row: Dale Horton, Brad Carlson, Bruce Denardo, John Gonzalez. Back Row: Coach Way Kopesky, Mike St. Claire, Bill Hall, Bill KreevoySheldon Roberts, Assistant Coach Tom Cady.

The 1977-1978 South High Wrestling team was one again coached by Wayne Kopesky.  South’s season ended with a 2-6 conference record.

There were once again outstanding individual performances like last year.  This year the outstanding performances were achieved by Bruce Denardo, Mike St. Clair and John Gonzalez, all seniors who will not be back next year.

The conference season opened with a 40-33 victory over West.  However, Edison destroyed the Tigers by a 59-5 score.  The last conference win of the season was in the Tigers third match where they defeated Henry 37-17.

South then went on a five-game losing streak, losing to Southwest, 36-32, Central, 44-17, Washburn, 48-12, Roosevelt, 37-23, and North, 39-22.

In the Region Team Competition South lost to Osseo 54-15.

However, the Region individual tournament led to success for two Tiger wrestlers, both Bruce Denardo, 126 pounds, and Mike St. Clair, 132 pounds, advanced to the State Individual Tournament. This was the first time South sent TWO individuals to the State Tournament.  Also, it was the second time St. Claire participated in the tournament, becoming South’s first multi-tournament participant in wrestling.

This is the last year Coach Kopesky coached the team.  He was assisted by Tom Cady.
