Like with any new season, the 1956-1957 season opened with hopes of a championship.  Coaches Luther Mona and Walt Butterwick job was to mold the players into championship form.

The conference season opened on a good note against Washburn.  South dominated the game, winning 61-39.  After this game, South ran into some bad luck.

The game against Roosevelt was a back and forth contest.  In the end, Roosevelt won 55-53.  The next opponent, West, was also a close game.  Again, South lost 50-41.  South then took on Edison in another close game.  Edison won, 71-64.

South took a break from conference play to take on St. Paul Wilson.  Close games seemed to be a norm during this season.  This time, South won, 52-50.

South returned to conference play against North.  This was the closest game of the season.  However, South came out on the short end of a 43-42 score, losing their fourth conference game in a row.

A return game against St. Paul Wilson was next on the agenda.  Unlike the first game, this game was not close.  The final score was 73-56.  Also unlike the first meeting, Wilson won the game.

The Tigers returned to conference play against Central.  For the fifth consecutive time, South lost a conference game, this time by a 60-38 score.

South ended the season on a four game winning streak.  The first game was against Southwest and the Tigers won 61-37.  Next South defeated Henry 69-50.  Marshall was the next victim of the Tigers, 56-40.  South ended the season against Vocational.  This was a closer game than the previous few and again the Tigers won 58-52.

The Tigers’ season ended with a loss in the District 17 game against Central.  South fell 66-55.

After the season, Curt Dahlager was named to the All-Conference team.
