The 1897-1898 football season began with a new leader.  The responsibility of molding the young men into football players would fall on the shoulders of Jack Loomis.  The players assembled for their first practice in early September.

Because of the lack of competition, South started their season against the University of Minnesota.  South put up a good fight but were no match for the college men, falling 22-0.

For the first time, South took on crosstown rival North. North first fielded a team last season.  North showed their inexperience being soundly defeated by South, 38-4.

South took on another college, taking on Carleton a day after defeating North.  South showed their fatigue and lost 30-0 to the college men.

South played their third college of the season taking on Hamilton University on October 22.  Hamline was no match for the well-rested South team.  South won 18-0.

South then took on the team from Madison, WI.  As happened last year, the Wisconsinites won 14-0.

South finished the season against Central.  This was no contest.  Central was routed 42-0.

South finished the season 3-3.  Against Minneapolis teams, the team was 2-0.
