Course Description and Goals:

In this course we will continue to build on themes, structures, vocabulary and skills learned in Spanish I.  You will learn strategies  to communicate effectively and improve your reading,  writing, listening and speaking  skills.  You will learn grammatical structures  as well as the topics and themes being studied..  You will gain an understanding of Spanish and Spanish-speaking cultures. In order to help us meet these goals, we will conduct most of the class in Spanish.  Come prepared to speak Spanish!



Spiral notebook for Spanish only (this will be collected periodically throughout the quarter)

Pocket folder or three ring binder for handouts and activities

Strongly recommended: Spanish-English dictionary


Course Requirements

  • You are expected to attend class everyday and do all of the oral and written assignments, including homework.  Successful progress demands active and consistent participation.
  • If you have an excused absence, you may make up the work you missed for full credit.  The work missed, including tests and quizzes, must be made up before school within ONE day plus  the number of excused absences.  NO WORK, TESTS, QUIZZES OR PARTICIPATION POINTS MAY BE MADE UP IF THE ABSENCE IS UNEXCUSED
  • Late work will receive half credit and will not be accepted after three days.
  • All work must have a proper heading (name, date, period) to receive credit.
  • All work should be produced by you, including daily assignments, projects, quizzes and exams.  Any work copied will result in no credit.


Participation Grade:

Daily participation in a foreign language class, including listening and speaking, is essential to learning the language.  Therefore, you will receive 5 participation points each day for being on time, prepared and with materials, on task, and participating fully in all class activities.  Two points will be deducted for tardiness and not bringing materials.  You may also lose participation points if you are off task or speaking English during Spanish-only times.  Many class activities may not be made up so it is important to attend class everyday.


Attendance and Tardies:

Attendance is one of the most important factors for your success in a language class.  Attending class, participating in class activities and making a real effort to speak Spanish will enable you to improve your language skills.  It is your responsibility to attend class and take advantage of these opportunities.


  • Attendance policy:  If you have two or more unexcused absences in this class you will be in danger of failing.
  • Tardy policy:  For each unexcused tardy, you will lose two participation points.  These points may not be made up.
  • Attendance incentive:  If you have no more than two excused absences, no more than two tardies, and no unexcused absences per quarter you may drop your lowest quiz score for that quarter.

Grade Reports

In addition to midterm reports sent home through the school, I will give you an individual printout of your midterm progress in class each quarter.  You will need to share this progress report with your parents or guardians and have them sign it before you return it to me for credit.

Class Expectations:

  • Come to class on-time, prepared and ready to learn (this includes bringing the appropriate materials daily)
  • Put forth your best effort
  • Bring only water into the classroom – no food, beverages or gum
  • Passes should be used on a need only basis and only when it’s an opportune time
  • Be respectful of yourself and others
  • No cell phones, portable music devices or other electronic equipment.  If any of these are visible to me, they will be confiscated and your parent or guardian will need to pick them up.
