Career and College Center (CCC)

2016-2017 Policies and Procedures

Coordinators: South High has two CCC Coordinators, Nneka Abdullah and Katie Hanson. The Career and College Center is open Monday – Friday 8:15 am – 4:15 pm.

Scanner: All students who enter the CCC need to type in their student ID number at the designated scanner computer (except for MLP classroom visits).

Passes: Students are allowed to use the CCC before school, after school, during open periods, or during class time (ONLY if they have an appointment with one of the CCC Coordinators or if their teacher has requested to send a student to the CCC with a pass). College Admission Representative Visits have their own pass and procedure, which is addressed in an additional attachment. Teachers have the final say if a student can miss class to be in the CCC or not.

CCC Happenings: We send out an email newsletter bi-weekly on Monday to both staff and students called “CCC Happenings” which highlights events in the center that week and opportunities for students. For full details of CCC events and other opportunities please visit the CCC Webpage. Parents are encouraged to visit the Counseling Webpage for Counseling and CCC information.

Weekly Schedule: We will also post a weekly schedule outside the door of the CCC that has all events in the CCC listed for that week.

College Representative Visits: Is attached as a separate document. We are currently scheduling appointments with representatives for the fall.  The first visit this year takes place on September 12th. New this year, South CCC will have Career Representative Visits for students who are interested in learning more about particular career pathways! More information to come.

Workshops/Individual Assistance: We offer scheduled workshops (every Thursday from 2-3:30) and individual appointments for students to receive help on the following topics: FAFSA, scholarships applications, college exploration, college applications, ACT/SAT registration, college essay, scholarship essay, Step Up application, resume, job searches and more. For individual appointments students must receive a pass from one of us. Teachers have the final discretion as to whether a student is able to leave class to attend.

Naviance and My Life Plan: Coordinators support counselors to ensure that all students meet their specific milestones at each grade level. We collaborate with teachers to bring students into the CCC to complete milestones. If you have questions regarding Naviance, please stop by the CCC and we will help.

Why do we do My Life Plan (MLP)? My Life Plan (MLP) is used in grades 6-12 to help students build their college and career plans. MLP requires students to explore self, college and career. Each grade level has required milestones students complete through a classroom activity. Activities include personality and interest assessments, career and college research and self-reflection surveys. Minneapolis uses a system called Naviance Family Connection to house every student’s college and career readiness plans/portfolio. Completing My Life Plan is a post-secondary planning graduation requirement.

South’s College Access Network (S.CAN): The South College Access Network (S.CAN) is made up of partner organizations and district programs that serve South students through in-school and outside-of-school curriculum. They provide opportunities for career and college exposure, and support them in academic planning and the college application process. If interested in ways to get students connected to any of the following programs visit the CCC!
