We shared with students yesterday our plan to change the doors through which students exit South. Students should now use the exit on 31st street (door #17) or 19th street (doors #6 and #7) to leave school. This change ensures the safest and most direct route possible for students taking the light rail, which is the majority of our student body. Students should continue to use their normal route (door #1) for entering the building.
Parents and families are welcome in our schools, and as you join us for any of our events or activities this year, we ask that you continue to use our guest entrance (door #1) in the South parking lot.
As your new principal, I have been assessing many aspects of our school and felt that this change was an important and necessary one. Although it was in the works for some time, a disturbance in the neighborhood on Friday caused the change to happen sooner. The new door for exiting the building is a permanent change that I believe will positively benefit the safety of our students.
I also want you to be aware of the precautions we take to ensure the safety of our students. We have consistent procedures around responding to emergency incidents, whether they occur at our school or in our neighborhood. On Friday, for example, our school was placed on a brief code yellow due to an apparent gunfire in the neighborhood. While the activity was not related in any way to our school, our precautions ensured that students remained in the building while police managed the issue. Just two minutes later, the police assured us that the situation was safe for student dismissal, and students were allowed to leave school.
If you have any questions about the door change, please don’t hesitate to contact me.
The entrance door is marked with a green arrow, and the exit doors are marked in blue.
