Ella Barnhill, Josiah Ferguson, Townesend Nelson, Elwood Olson and Eliza Roberts have been declared National Merit Semifinalists, and are now in the running to become Finalists for National Merit Scholarship honors. Congratulations!
To become a Semifinalist, students must have an outstanding academic record, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores, confirming the student’s performance on the PSAT qualifying test.
To become a Finalist, the Semifinalist and his or her high school must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the Semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, honors and awards received.
Semifinalists are winnowed down to a list of Finalists, to be named in February. These students will represent the field from which Merit Scholars are ultimately selected. Announcements of Merit Scholars are released April through July.
