INSTRUMENTAL

Beginning Band (Offered Fall Only)
Open to: All students
Length: Semester
Beginning Band is a course designed to give students an opportunity to learn a band instrument at the high school level. A strong emphasis is placed on basics of music, as well as on the problems of each individual instrument. This class provides the necessary tools for the student to move into the Symphonic band and a more expansive group experience.

Symphonic Band
Open to: Any students who meets prerequisite
Prerequisite: Middle School band experience or Beginning Band
Length: Year-long
Symphonic Band provides a medium of musical involvement and experience through performance. The band members are primarily 9th and 10th graders. The band performs a variety of musical styles available including new literature and standard band classics. The students learn the principles of performance such as techniques, tone production, and style. Through these principles, students gain an understanding of basic theory and discover the beauty of musical involvement. Evening Concerts held throughout the year.

Concert Band
Open to: Any student who meets prerequisite
Prerequisite: Instructor's permission and audition required
Length: Year-long
Concert Band provides a medium of musical involvement and experience through performance. It also offers the student opportunities to perform the varied styles of music available to the contemporary band at a more advanced level. The student learns the principles of performance such as techniques, tone production, and style. Through these principles, students gain an understanding of basic theory and discover the beauty of musical involvement. Evening Concerts held throughout the year.

Wind Ensemble
Open to: Any student who meets prerequisite
Prerequisite: Instructor's permission and audition required
Length: Year-long
The Wind Ensemble is a select group of musicians who perform at high level of proficiency. The group offers advanced students a challenge of working on concert literature at a difficult level. The student learns the principles of phrasing, intonation, articulation, alternate fingerings, sight-reading, and style. Through these principles, students gain a higher understanding of music theory, will continue work on small ensembles, and will be exposed to solo repertoire. The Wind Ensemble performs numerous concerts throughout the year including a possible Spring Tour. Evening Concerts held throughout the year.

Jazz Ensemble 1 & 2
Open to: Any student who meets prerequisite
Prerequisite: Instructor's permission and audition required. This class meets zero hour!
Preference given to students enrolled in Symphonic Band, Concert Band,
Symphonic Winds and Wind Ensemble)
Length: Year-long
The Jazz Ensemble is a select group of musicians who perform at high level of proficiency. The group offers advanced students a challenge of working on literature at a difficult level. The student learns the principles of jazz phrasing, articulation, and style. Students explore and perform works of various styles and periods. Emphasis is placed on improvisation and ensemble performance. The Jazz Ensemble performs numerous concerts throughout the year including an annual Spring Tour.

Beginning Strings
Open to: All students
Length: Year-long
This course is designed to give students the opportunity to learn or relearn how to play a violin, viola, cello or bass.

String Orchestra
Open to: Any student who meets prerequisite
Prerequisite: Previous String experience
Length: Year-long
String Orchestra provides a medium of musical involvement and experience through performance. It also offers the student opportunities to perform the varied styles of music available to string orchestras. The student learns the principles of performance such as bowing techniques, tone production, and style. Through these principles, students gain an understanding of basic theory and discover the beauty of musical involvement.

Chamber Orchestra
Open to: Any student who meets prerequisite
Prerequisite: Instructor‘s permission and audition required
Length: Year-long
The Chamber Orchestra is a select group of musicians who perform at a high level of proficiency. The group offers advanced students a challenge of working on concert and standard literature at a difficult level. The student learns the principles of phrasing, intonation, sight reading, and style. The Chamber Orchestra performs numerous concerts throughout the year including an annual Spring Tour. Evening Concerts held throughout the year.

VOCAL

Concert Choir
Open to: All students
Length: Year-long
This course is a beginning choir that emphasizes choral tone and development of the voice as an instrument. Vocal skills studied include musical symbol recognition, diction, and vocal technique. Students in this ensemble will perform three public concerts a year.

Varsity Choir
Open to: All Students
Prerequisite: An Audition is required for admittance
Length: Year-long
This course is a mid-level choir that performs a wide variety of music with an increased difficulty level. Students will begin to perform in small ensembles in front of their classmates, in addition to their three yearly public performances.

Women’s Choir
Open to: All Students
Prerequisite: An Audition is required for admittance
Length: Year-long
This course is an intermediate ensemble of girls that performs choral literature in three- and four-part harmony from a variety of genres. Note-reading and musical concepts are reviewed and built-upon in this middle-level ensemble, as are the fundamentals of healthy and expressive singing. This group performs three concerts a year at SHS. Entrance is by audition only, with auditions held year-round.

South Pop Singers
Open to: All students
Prerequisite: Instructor's permission and audition required. This class meets zero hour!
(Preference given to students enrolled in Concert Choir, Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble)
Length: Year-long
This refined and outstanding vocal ensemble of about 16 singers performs a wide variety of music including pop and jazz. They have toured and performed numerous concerts throughout the year.

GENERAL MUSIC

Class Piano 1
Open to: All students
Length: Semester
This course is offered to students at any level of proficiency ranging from beginner to advanced. Students work at their own rate of progress and are encouraged to expand their musical horizons by exposure to many styles of piano literature. A highlight of the course is the weekly recital when students perform for the piano class.

Class Piano 2
Open to: All students
Prerequisite: Class Piano 1 or proficiency test
Length: Semester
This course is a continuation of Class Piano 1. Students will be given more advanced materials that will give them the opportunity to complete the graduation standard in Music.
