Jazz @ South

South High Jazz has a long tradition of quality jazz education. Currently, South has two full jazz ensembles that meet five days a week. All of South’s groups are very active in performance and strive to play at a high level. South Jazz has hosted numerous Jazz Festivals and has an annual big band vocal concert, the South Singer Showcase, which features classic big band vocal tunes sung by students along with a special guest vocalist. In 2011, Jazz at South High hit the airwaves on KBEM-FM, 88.5. The show featured big band performances from past and present ensembles as well as combo performances by current students. Jazz groups from South have been invited to perform all over the Twin Cities area including: Orchestra Hall, Ted Mann Concert Hall, Ordway, and Target Field. Special guests working and/or performing with South Jazz include: Delfeayo Marsalis, Irvin Mayfield, Victor Goines, Ali Jackson, Chris Crenshaw, Ted Nash, Michael Lewis (South Alum), Jose James (South Alum), Chris Thomson, Charmin Michelle, Connie Evingson, Steve Faison, Judi Donaghy, Dennis Spears, JazzMN Big Band, Doug Snapp, Bob Baca, and Steve Wright.
