Gay Straight Alliance

The Gay/Straight Alliance was formed at South in 1997 by a small group of students who wanted to make schools safer, more tolerant places for GLBT students and families.  Remembering the homophobia they or their peers had experienced, they choose to go back to middle schools to educate students to be more knowledgeable and tolerant of GLBT people.  Since then, the group has presented to classes in intermediate, middle and high schools in Minneapolis and Columbia Heights.  They are also active in promoting Anti-homophobia Week, the Day of Silence, and participating in Lobby Day at the Legislature and in several community events.
