Debate Team

South Debate has experienced another great start to the season.  Cole Johnson-Jensen and Oskar Tauring-Traxler were an undefeated 3rd seed at a national tournament in Iowa where teammates Jacob Boucher and Lillie Oulette-Howtiz took octofinalist awards.  At the regional tournament in Minnesota, three teams placed in the top 10 in novice division, Grace Palmer and Etta Lynch-Beatty won the JV division, and three teams placed in the top 5 of the varsity division.  The following weekend, the team of Oskar Tauring-Traxler and Trace Thompson won on a 3-0 decision in the final round of the varsity division at the Roseville tournament.  As a high school, South currently leads the Minnesota Debate Teacher's Association for best policy debate high school.  We are very proud of our great debaters!

Students on the debate team compete at the novice (beginner), junior varsity, and varsity levels, depending on experience and skill.  South offers both Lincoln-Douglas (one-on-one, valued-based) Debate and 2-person Policy Debate.  Preparation starts in early September, and tournaments run from October through December.  Practices focus on critical thinking skills, speaking style and research techniques.  Students have the opportunity to earn a letter and to gain membership in the National Forensic League (a national honor society for students involved in Debate and Speech).  An introductory meeting is held within one week of the start of school.
