I was born in Chicago, but I grew up in the Transcendental Meditation centered town of Fairfield, Iowa. My aunt, Jan, who is a criminal justice lawyer, was a huge influence on my ideals of equity, social justice, and equal rights. She planted the seeds that would later lead me to education. At the University of Minnesota I studied English Literature and developed a passion for democratic education. Then, I taught English for two years in Aranjuez, España and also learned Spanish. After this, I got a teaching licence in English as a Second Language and a Master’s in Education from the University of Minnesota.
