Greg LaLonde, who served the last three seasons as assistant coach, was named head coach to start the 1998-99 season.  Tim Davis and Dave Dirk joined the team as the new assistant coaches.  Also, the conference went back to playing a double round robin schedule.

South opened the season with two 3-0 wins over Washburn and Roosevelt.  This brought the Tigers to a match with North.  The two teams were tied after four games, with North taking the fifth game and the match.

Against Southwest, the two teams were tied after four games, but this time South won 3-2.

The first half ended with South winning both against Henry and Edison, 3-0.

The second half started with the Tigers beating Washburn 3-1 and Roosevelt 3-0.  Then came the match against North.  The Tigers exacted some revenge, winning convincingly, 3-0.

South then took on Southwest.  The Tigers, with their one loss, and the Lakers with two losses, knew this was for the conference title, even though South had two more conference matches remaining.  North, also with two losses, paid close attention to the results of this match.  Southwest shocked the Tigers and won 3-0!  There were now three teams tied with two losses!

South ended the season with 3-0 wins over Henry and Edison.

In non-conference matches, South defeated both Fridley and St. Louis Park 3-0.  Unfortunately, the Tigers lost to Totino Grace 3-1.

South finished the conference season with a 10-2 record, tied with North and Southwest for the Conference Title.  The Twin City match was cancelled this season.
