“A distance runner needs to be self-motivated.  Cross Country is a mental sport.  You’re out there by yourself competing against yourself,” said Coach Warren Karri according to the 1997 South Yearbook.  These words are what seems to have driven the Tiger runners’ success over the last eight seasons.  Kaari’s words of wisdom come from 30 years of coaching the Tiger squad.  He has been joined for the last 15 year by Craig Canham.

South opened the season hosting the Nokomis Invitational.  A first place finish was because of the hard work the runners did during the off-season.

South followed the Nokomis Meet with meets in Monticello and at the Metro Invitational.  In both meets, the Tigers claimed the top spot.

In two tough meets, the Tigers finished fifth at the Apple Valley Eagle Invitational and sixth at the Burnsville Invitational.

In the final race of the regular season, South claimed the title at the Rum River Run in Anoka.

For the ninth straight season, South claimed the title at the Conference Meet.

After only finishing second at the Region Meet last season, the Tigers clawed back to claim the title this year and advanced to the State Meet.

At State, the Tigers finished the season in fourth place.
