The feelings were confident and optimistic on the wrestling team for the 1995-1996 season.  With an increase in school support and new team members with a lot of potential, the team started off on the right foot.

Perhaps the hardest thing the team faced this year was the absence of individuals to fill weight slots.  “There definitely was not enough people,” said junior Andrew Gau.

This problem was overcome because of the potential that new, younger members of the team possessed.  A lot of the team victories came from the younger wrestlers.  “We had a lot of good young wrestlers that will come back next year,” said junior Kevin Mellen.

The coaches, Mark Sanders and Rich Barron stressed cooperation.  They worked well together and the positive morale helped them carry on.

During the conference meets, South finished in 6th place with a 1-5 record.  The only conference opponent the Tigers defeated was Henry, 40-30.

The conference losses were to Southwest, 58-15, Edison 54-18, Roosevelt, 39-27, Washburn 51-21, and North 63-9.

The only non-conference score available is a 41-30 win over DeLaSalle.

Some of the triumphant moments for the team were the three all-conference members, juniors Andrew Gau, Kevin Mellen and Scott McIntyre.  Gau finished the season with a record of 28-3.

Even though the team was not as successful as they hoped, Gau and Mellen qualified for the State Tournament.
