This year’s South High wrestling team was patched together with members who had varying degrees of experience.  The team was led by John Jurisch who has been a coach for eleven year and has spent the last five years as either an Assistant or Head coach of the Tigers.  Experience was also behind the team’s Co-Captains Corey Shilson and Ben Maul.  This was Shilson’s fifth year competing as a Tiger and Maul’s Fourth!

Of the estimated 25 athletes who composed the Varsity and JV teams, many were new to the sport.  The wrestlers predicted that the team would improve as the younger members grew in strength and skill in succeeding years.

The varsity team again finished in last place, losing all conference matches.  The score of the matches were: Edison 44-11, Washburn 39-28, Roosevelt 57-12, North 45-21, Southwest 50-18 and Henry 35-22.

South won two non-conference matches against St. Paul Central, 41-26, and Totino Grace, 44-20.  They also lost non-conference matchest to Edina, 39-30, St. Paul Johnson, 38—26, and Hopkins, 41-32.

The fate of the JV was similar to the varsity, not winning a match.  However, against Southwest, the Tigers and Lakers ended the match in a 36-36 tie.  The scores of the losses were to Edison 60-2, Washburn 27-24, Roosevelt 58-3, North 45-21 and Henry 28-3.

For the third year in a row, Senior Corey Shilson, 119 pounds, advanced to the State Tournament.  He was joined by his brother, Sophomore Chad, 105 pounds, and Junior Eric Nyenhuis, 185 pounds.)
