Head Coach Levain Carter and his assistants, Ray Crump and newly hired Michael Winston, knew the 1985-1986 season would be challenging.  The team was extremely young with many players putting in time on both the Varsity and JV.

The inexperience was exposed during the first half of the conference season.  The Tigers opened the season with five straight losses.  The first loss came against Edison, 82-73.  Washburn downed the Tigers 62-55.  North destroyed South 90-49.  Roosevelt won 86-77.  Henry scored 101 points in their win over South.  The Tigers had 82.

South won their first game of the conference season in the last game of the first round against Southwest.  The 23-point win, 73-50, gave the Tigers hope the second half would be better.

The second half started as the first half ended with a win.  South played an excellent defensive game against Edison, winning 52-36.  This was followed by a third straight win, this time against Washburn.  The Millers fought hard, but the Tigers avenged their earlier loss with a 44-39 win.

Roosevelt broke the Tigers winning streak. This game was close, but the Teddies pushed ahead and won 58-53.  Against North, fans were not expecting what happened.  The last game was a blow out.  In this game, the Tigers played as everyone expected at the start of the game and lost by six, 66-60.

South finished the Conference season with wins against Southwest and Henry.  Against Southwest, the Tigers amassed 24 more points than Southwest, winning 88-64.  The Henry game came down to the final minutes.  South clung to a three-point victory, 68-65.
