With the closing of three Minneapolis Public High Schools, Central, Marshall-University, and West, there was an influx of students into South High School.  Coach Warren Kaari and his new co-coach, Craig Canham, began contacting the new South students who may be interested in Cross Country.

There was only one dual meet score was reported.  South defeated Southwest 19-36.

According to the 1983 South Yearbook, the Tigers won the regular season conference title.

In the conference meet, South finished in second place.  Four Tigers placed in the top 10 finishers.  Laurie Harris finished in 5th place in a time of 12:25.00.  Joy Farmer, 6th place, Teresa Klein, 7th place, and Monica Capra, 10th place, and Liz Anderson, 13th place, were the Tigers whose scores counted in the team results.

Harris, Farmer, Klein and Capra were the first South runners named to the Cross Country All-Conference team.  Joy Farmer was named by the Minnesota State Cross Country Coaches Association as an All-State runner.
