As the 1979-1980 season began, a dedicated but small number of women joined coaches Mike and Neil Anderson to form the Tiger Swim team.  The team has been hampered in recent years with a lack of experience.  This year was no difference with three seniors, Marie Capra, Shelly Hartley and Cathy Wurzer, who provided leadership for their younger teammates.

South opened the season taking on South-side rival Southwest.  Southwest pummeled the Tigers 114-39.  This was followed by another South-side meet, with the Tigers taking on Washburn.  The Millers handed the Tigers their worst defeat in program history, 137-11.

Things seemed to look up as the Tigers took on Central.  South lost, but the meet was relatively close, with a final score of 47-35.

The Tigers and Tommies faced off in early October.  Edison handed the Tigers their fourth straight loss, 110-52.

The Teddies were South’s next opponent.  South lost their fifth straight meet, 100-58.

Against West, the Tigers pulled off an upset.  West finished with a 5-3 record in the conference and was expected to be the easy winner.  South did not listen to the experts and swam their best meet of the season, winning 63-47.

South finished the regular season with losses to Henry, 102-64, and Marshall-University, 103-54.

South participated the conference meet, which was won by Washburn.  The Tigers finished eighth, scoring 31 points.

The Tigers finished the season tied with Central for last place in the conference with a 1-7 record.
