The 1977-78 Cross Country season was hampered in a number of ways.  First, there were only nine runners on the team.  Because of the lack of depth, any injury would be catastrophic.  And injuries did happen.  The most impactful was to Melvin Alvarez, who had run a conference best time early in the season, but was injured and could not participate in the Conference Meet or the Region Meet.

South opened the season against Central.  The Tigers ran well and came home with a 23-32 win.

South faced Henry next and the lack of numbers showed, as the Patriots won 20-43.  This was also very evident in the meet against Southwest.  The Tigers fell 15-50.

South evened their record with a very competitive win over West, 27-28.  After this meet, the injuries and lack of numbers began taking its toll on the Tigers.

South lost their next three meets.  First, North won 21-36.  The Washburn won 20-44.  In a non-conference meet, St. Paul Harding also won, 22-38.

South won their last meet of the season, defeating Central for a second time, 20-37.

South ended the season with two losses.  Edison claimed the victory 21-34.  Roosevelt won 24-37.

In post-season events, South finished a disappointing ninth in the Conference Meet.  Randy Munnell, who finished 38th, was the best Tiger runner.

In the Region 5AA Meet, the Tigers finished 12th.  Melvin Alvarez returned from an injury and placed 11th, just missing out an opportunity to participate in the State Meet.
