The 1977-1978 Gymnastics season, under Head Coach Nancy Johnson, had hopes of improving over the previous season’s 8th place finish.  This year, Barb Prok assisted Coach Johnson.

The season opened on December 21 with a meet against West.  Unfortunately for the Tigers, West was too powerful and won 90.8-75.4.   The second conference match did not take place until after Winter Break.  That meet, against Roosevelt, also saw the Tigers on the short end of the score, losing a close meet 92.9-86.9.

The first conference victory of the season came against the North Polars.  The Tigers took out their frustrations against the Polars, demolishing them 81-28. South then began rotating between wins and losses.  Southwest defeated South 99.85-83.75.  The Tigers then bounced back against Central and won 94.55-88.7.  But, they then lost to Washburn 98.95-76.4.  The Tigers then defeated Edison, 96-64.

The rotating streak ended with a second consecutive victory, this time against Henry, 91-73.

The team also participated in two non-conference meets, losing to Chaska 86-84, and defeating Breck 86.4-66.8.

The Varsity team finished in 5th place during the regular season with a 4-4 record.

The Conference Meet was held February 18.  South finished in 6th place, scoring 81.1 points.  In the Conference Meet, one gymnast finished in the top ten all around, Debbie Rosenow, 9th.  Rosenow also finished 9th in the uneven bars, the best finish for a Tiger in an individual event.

During the regular season, the JV also finished 4-4.  They defeated North, Central, Washburn and Edison.  The Tiger JV lost to West, Roosevelt, Southwest and Henry.

The JV Conference Meet was held February 23.  South finished in 6th place, scoring 49.85 points.  Two gymnasts finished in the all-around top ten: Marie Capra, 3rd, Alissa Siegler, 9th.  Marie Capra finished 7 in the Vault, the best finish in an individual event for any South gymnast.
