As a sport becomes established in schools and throughout the state, more opportunities arise for the participants.  This happened with swimming.  For the first time since 1942, there was a Women’s State Swimming Meet.  Even though no South swimmer advanced to the meet, it was a goal of many of the participants.

South opened the season against Edison.  The Tommies’ swimmers were too powerful for the Tigers, giving Edison a 68-29 win.

Southwest was next.  Again, the Tigers were not successful, with Southwest winning 72.5-24.5.

The worst defeat of the season came against Washburn.  The Millers boiled the water, winning 146-58.

Roosevelt was the next opponent to hand a defeat to the Tigers.  The final was 65-30.

The closest meet of the season was against West.  The Tigers lost a competitive 55-39 meet.

The last two meets were also losses.  Central won 66-31 and Henry beat the Tigers 58-38.

South ended the season participating in the Metro Sectional meet.  The Tigers finished eighth, edging out Marshall-University by three points.

The best swimmer of the season was Kristi King.  King won the 50 yard and 100 yard freestyle in most of the events she participated.  Divers Val Hoehn and Debbie Rosenow improved greatly during the season, placing in the consolation rounds in both the City Meet and the Metro Sectional Meet.

Nancy Johnson again guided the women.  She was assisted by Bonnie Rosenfield.
