For the first time in school history, the 1973-74 school year saw a new sport, girls volleyball.  South and some of the other Minneapolis schools began offering athletic opportunities to females because of a new Federal Law called “Title IX”

Little is known of the first season other than the matches were the best of three.  South lost the only two matches recorded.  Edison defeated the Tigers 2-1.  Southwest also won by the same score.  The match scores against Southwest were 15-3, 12-15, 15-13.

It is unknown who coached this first team.
