The 1970-1971 Tiger wrestling team was led by Captain Steve Schon.  This year’s team finished with a 9-6 overall record and a 5-5 record in conference matches.

The team started with an easy win over Marshall-University, 25-15, but had a closer match with Washburn, whom they also defeated 25-21.

Roosevelt easily defeated the Tigers 30-8, followed by a closer defeat by Southwest, 29-15.

The Tigers defeated Central 27-15 but then lost to Vocational 24-17.  An extremely close match against North went in favor of the Polars, 22-19.

The next two matches were even closer both by one point!  The Tigers topped West by a 24-23 score but lost to eventual Conference Champion Edison 22-21!!!  The last conference match of the season was another close one with the Tigers defeating Henry 26-20.

Again, South did not fare well in the District 17 tournament, finishing in 11th place.  However, two wrestlers, Mike Iversen at 145 pounds and Paul Gonzalez at 165 pounds, advanced from the District 17 meet to the Region meet.

The future looks bright after analyzing the Sophomore Conference Tournament.  The Sophomores finished in 4th place behind Southwest, Edison and Washburn.

This year’s team had three All-Conference wrestlers: Rick Palla, Steve Schon and Paul Gonzalez.

For the ninth year, Robert Lee was the head coach. Mr. Berg and Bill Sommers assisted Mr. Lee for the second time.
