This year, the Tigers saw the return of a former All-Conference player Eric Magdanz.  Mr. Magdanz joined Luther Mona as the team’s assistant coach. This was Coach Mona’s 25th season at the helm of the South basketball program.

South opened the conference season against Roosevelt.  The Teddies ran all over the Tigers, winning 59-31.  The next game, against Vocational, was the Tigers turn to shine.  South won 68-52, evening their record.

The Tigers then lost their next two games.  First they fell to West, 62-55.  Then, they were beaten badly by Henry, 58-37.

Against North, The Tiger bounced back and pulled out a 15-point win, 50-35.  Unfortunately, this was the Tigers’ last conference win of the season.

The Tigers finished the conference season with a five-game losing streak, in which they were beaten soundly by all five teams.  They lost to Marshall 45-25, Washburn 61-52, Southwest 69-60, Edison 67-60, and Central 65-50.

In the District 17 tournament, not much was expected of the Tigers.  In the first game of the playoffs, the Tigers stunned Edison and won 67-60.  They advanced to the quarter finals, where they took on Henry, who finished 8-2 and in second place.  South played tough and upset the Patriots 57-51.  In the semi-finals, the team played Marshall. Marshall sent the Tigers to the third place game by a 43-24 score.  The Tigers finished their season against Washburn.  Washburn won 59-52, giving South a fourth place finish in the District.

The Tigers finished in 10th place with a 2-8 record.  At the end of the season, Craig Johnson was named to the second team All-Conference.  Phil Colich was named an Honorable Mention All-Conference player.
