South’s wrestlers, led by Head Coach Robert Lee and Assistant Coach Maurice Webert, finished the season with a 6-7 record, 4-6 record in conference.  Injuries and illnesses played an important part in the team’s showing this season.

The team opened the season with a 27-17 loss to Southwest.  The Tigers bounced back against Edison with a 39-13 victory and another win against North 24-22.

However, the losses began to pile up with the team losing to Roosevelt, 28-15, Washburn 29-19, Henry 27-15, and Vocational 38-11.

They defeated West 31-25, lost to Marshall 38-8, and ended the conference season with a victory over Central, 32-14.

Senior Chuck Balck, 165 pounds, was hospitalized with spinal meningitis early in the season and never returned.  Junior Jerry Mossak was disabled late in the season with a pinched leg muscle.

This year’s team had three conference champions, Bob Click, 133 pounds, Lyle Berg, 154 pounds, and Gary Sande, heavyweight.

In the District 17 competition, Sande took first place, Berg and Alan Holbrook each took third in the weight divisions.  The team finished 7th at Districts.
