The 1961 wrestling team finished the season with a 4-5-1 record, which placed them sixth in the city standings.  The first match of the season saw out grapplers wrestle to a 28-28 tie with West.  In this match five of the ten wrestlers won and five lost. 

The next match, against Marshall, saw the Tigers victorious 35-21.  The win broke their 21 game winless streak which stretched over four seasons.  Peterson, Rootes, Dodge, Martineau and Olson won their matches.

South then went on a four-game winning streak, defeating Central 39-11.  Six wrestlers won their matches. Southwest was defeated 40-11 with seven wrestlers winning. The last victory of the season came against Edison 33-20.This match saw Gaustad, Peterson, Dodge, Rootes, Westerdahl and Reinhart winning their matches to boost the Tigers over the Tommies.

The last five matches of the season were losses to North 32-20, Roosevelt 38-10, Washburn 26-17, Henry 26-21, Vocational 31-23. 

The end of the season found Harry Dodge in second place in the city in the 165 pound class.

Two wrestlers, Dave Gaustad and Jim Rootes, were District 17 champions and advanced to the Region meet.  Gaustad wrestled in the 95 pound class and Rootes in the 138 pound class.  Rootes was also named to the All-Conference team.
