Front Row: Fjelstad, Berg, Ferguson, Shultz, Fischer. Middle Row: Lawrence, Foth, Brathoude, Sullivan. Back Row: Raycroft, Coach Rainey, Becker Lanoue.

This year’s grapplers, although they did not accumulate an outstanding team record, distinguished themselves in several weight classes.  Coached by Robert Rainey and led by Captain Jerry Ferguson, the team’s city record of 1-7 was not indicative of some of the fine individual performances.

The Tigers opened their season against Roosevelt and for the fourth consecutive year, lost to the Teddies by a score of 33-17. Following this loss, South lost two more meets, falling to Vocational 38-18 and then falling to Washburn 46-10..

The Pioneers of Central again were the victims of the Tigers for the third time, the Tigers defeated the Pioneers, this time by a score of 42-10.

South ended the season with a four meet losing streak, losing to North 32-16, then to Henry 27-21, then to West 40-6 and finally to Marshall 25-20.

The team then participated in the District 17 meet, finishing with 31 points, which was good for 6th place out of nine teams.

Freshman Dave Fischer became the first conference champion when he won the 95 pound championship.  He was runner-up in the District meet.

The most outstanding wrestler on the team was Jerry Ferguson, who in his fourth year on the team, won both the City and District 165 pound championship.  Coach Rainey commented, “Everyone will be back next year except Ferguson.  With some help and a little luck, South should have an excellent team next season.”
