The wrestling team, again coached by Robert Rainey, has its best season, winning double the number of games they won the first two games.  Their record of 4-5 placed them tied for 6th place with Vocational.

The season opener was against Marshall.  The Cardinals won easily 34-15.  The second meet, against the Teddies, saw the same results as the meet against Marshal.  Roosevelt won 31-11.

The third meet was against Vocational.  It was an extremely close meet, with the fate of both teams being determined by the heavyweight match.  South won the match ……and the meet by a 28-26 score.

Washburn defeated the Tigers handily 43-2 in the next meet.  However, South returned to the win column beating Central 34-13. With this win, South equaled the total number of wins from the first two seasons.

Two more losses followed in the next two meets, against North 35-11 and Henry 34-16.

West and South tangled in the second-to-the-last meet of the season.  Again, this was a very close meet and it came down to the final wrestlers.  South won 24-22.

The last meet was against Edison.  The Tigers thrashed the Tommies by a 53-3 score, thus ending the season with a two-game winning streak.

Dennis Johnson, captain of this year’s team, came in second in the 136 pound class in the city meet.  Larry Spartz came in third in the 157 pound class.  Both advanced to the finals in the sub-regional tournament before being defeated. Johnson and Spartz were both named to the All-Conference team.
