The South Basketball Team, despite the fact that they lacked height, proved to be a difficult opponent, thanks to the coaching of Luther Mona. This season, Mr. Mona was assisted by Walt Butterwick.

South opened the season with an impressive win over Roosevelt.  Roosevelt was picked to be one of the top three teams in the city.  The game came down to the final second when South won 48-47.

South then took on Vocational.  The Tigers easily won 53-42.  South started the season 2-0 and ready to contend for the title.

Reality set in when the Tigers played Edison.  The Tommies showed the Tigers they had a lot more work to do to contend, losing 72-60.

Two more losses followed this one, a 63-32 drubbing by West and a very close 39-37 loss to Central.

The team took on Southwest and won 70-51.  This would be the last win of the season for the Tigers.

South then lost four of their last five game, including the District playoff game.  North won 55-49, Washburn won 72-49.  Henry won 67-60.  South won the last regular season game of the year against Marshall, 46-41.

In the District 17 playoffs, South was destroyed by Washburn 71-28, to end their season.  Dick Randazza was named to the all-conference team.
