South opened the 1938-1939 football season hoping to improve on last season’s fifth place finish.  Coaches Lester Barnard and Frank Cleve were joined by a new assistant, Luther Mona.

South opened the season against their biggest rival, Roosevelt.  The Teddies held South to only one touchdown.  Roosevelt scored two and won 13-6.

South rose to the occasion against West.  The South defense shut out West on their way to a 13-0 Tiger victory.

South scored nine points against Central, but lost 13-9.

The defense shut out their opponent for the second time of the season when the Tigers defeated Edison 7-0.

North turned the tables on the Tigers and gave South their third loss, North won 7-0.

For the third time this season, the South defense shut out their opponent.  Unfortunately, the Marshall defense did the same thing to the Tigers, with the game ending in a 0-0 tie.

The Tigers finished the season against Washburn.  The Millers handed South another loss, winning 12-9.

South finished the season in seventh place with a 2-4-1 record.
