1905-1906 School Year

The 1905-1906 South football team had a number of factors stacking up against them as the season began in September.  First, most of the players had never played the game before.  Second, they were coming off of a season when South did not field a team. Finally, they were led by Mr. Goldblum, who was in his first season (and last as it would turn out) as coach.

South played their first game against their Alumni.  This game was a low-scoring affair where defense reigned.  At the end of the game, no one won.  The final was a 5-5 tie.

St. Paul Mechanic Arts was South’s next opponent.  South won going away, 20-5.

South’s first game against a city school was against Central.  South was outclassed and was shut out 18-0.

South then took on the team from Superior, WI.  No final score was reported, but according to reports, the team from Wisconsin won the game.

On October 28, South was supposed to take on North.  After North had four players declared ineligible, the game was cancelled because the team refused to play.  One could argue that North forfeited, giving South a much-needed win.

East provided the next opponent.  Both teams fought hard, but again South was not able to score.  East won 12-0.

The final game of the season was against St. Paul Central.  The St. Paulites demolished the Orange and Black, winning by another shut out, 33-0.

South finished the season with a 1-5 record (2-5 if you count the North game as a forfeit).  In the city, South was 0-2 (1-2 if you count the North game as a forfeit).  Holmstrom was named to the All-Star team by the Minneapolis Tribune.
